Straddling the Edge by Julie Prestater Book Tour

STRADDLING THE EDGE (Against the Wall, #3) blurb:
Summer McGallian … the scandalous home wrecker from Against the Wall and Between The Sheets. The one who stole her co-worker’s fiancĂ©, the other woman, the one people whisper about and stay away from. Only for Summer, things aren't always as they appear and she knows that better than anyone. She hasn’t been herself since she was in high school, when life was less complicated and relationships weren’t about making compromises to land the guy. When her heart is broken, there's only one thing left for her to do … prove she isn't who everyone thinks she is. And maybe, just maybe, she can get back to being comfortable in her own skin again, without input from a man. But when she encounters Sexy Guy, Dean Michaels, everything Summer has ever known about the opposite sex is about to change.

Dean Michaels knew he’d seen her somewhere before. What he never imagined was that the gorgeous woman in a baseball cap and hooded sweatshirt tossing back a beer in his favorite spot could be Summer McGallian—the woman who always looked like she’d stepped off the pages of a glamour magazine when he’d seen her from afar at work. And to make matters worse, she’s Chase Marino’s ex, the one guy who gets under his skin like no other. If the thought of being someone’s bitch in jail wasn’t enough to scare him, he would’ve strangled that bastard years ago and tossed the body in the Mojave Desert. But forget about Chase … Dean knew from the moment he saw Summer’s sexy smile and heard her cute laugh, she had to be his. And he won't let anything get in the way of that.

The Against The Wall series isn’t just about steamy sex scenes and swoon-worthy romance, but about new friendships, undying love, and a ton of laughter. Enjoy the ride as you get to know and love Summer and Dean, just as you did Shelly and Matt, and Melissa and Tyler, in the final book, Straddling The Edge.

Straddling the Edge is the final book in the series.  Discuss what you're going to miss about the series and all of the characters.

Straddling The Edge is no longer the final book. With the prodding of one of my most valued readers, I’ve decided to write Chase’s story. He will meet his match in Playing Chase. And Shelly, Mel, and Summer will be there to torment him along the way. Think John Tucker Must Die meets The Bachelor.

When it is all over, I will miss the crazy banter between the girls. I feel like they are so much like my own friends and I will definitely miss the laughter.

Book Tour - Broken Secrets in Madison Falls & Giveaway

Title: Broken Secrets in Madison Falls
Author: Rachel Hanna

Blurb:
When twenty-four year old Bella Clay experiences yet another major loss in her life, she is forced to come home and become a young, single mother to her seven year old nephew. No one in the small town of Madison Falls knows just how damaged she is, and they certainly don't know her dirty little secret about where she's been for the last two years.

Grant Brady is the local hunk who works as the elementary school PE and history teacher. When he takes an interest in helping Bella start over in Madison Falls, she tries to push him away afraid that he will find out her dark secrets. What she doesn't know is that Grant has a secret of his own.

Will love prevail or will one or both of them run for the hills out of fear?

Excerpt:

Lori Clay was the ultimate Mom. Or at least she tried to be. She adored her seven year old son, Ethan, more than anything in the world. As a single mother at only twenty-two years old, she still felt like a kid herself in so many ways.

When she got pregnant at only fourteen years old, no one was surprised. She and her older sister lost their mother in a car accident when they were still in elementary school, and it had changed both of their lives, affecting them in a multitude of ways. They grew up in foster care, which meant they never had a place to call home.

Lori never felt like she belonged. She sought out comfort in the arms of the wrong teenage boy who had promised her the world but didn’t even stick around for the birth of their son. The last time she’d heard anything about him, he was in jail for selling drugs. It reminded her of their own father who never stuck around to know either of his daughters. He’d bailed on them and their mother when Lori was only two weeks old.

Lori had to raise her son alone while her older sister, Bella, had taken a job across the country in California. She seemed to make pretty good money as a marketing representative for a make-up company, which wasn’t shocking because she was so beautiful. Bella had long blond hair and striking blue eyes. She looked like a cover model, and Lori often wondered why she didn’t pursue modeling. Originally, she had moved to L.A. to make it as an actress, but that career never took off. No matter what, Bella sent Lori money every month like clockwork to make sure that she and Ethan had what they needed.

As she rushed over to her son’s school to take him his lunch bag, she thought about everything her sister had done for her since they were kids. She stayed by her side in every foster home and often took the brunt of the abuse they suffered. Lori knew that there must be good foster parents out there in the world who cared for the kids they took in, but she and her sister were never lucky enough to find any of those people. They seemed to get the dregs of society instead.

First, there was the Logan household where they both endured physical abuse from Cal Logan. He was a big barrel of a man with a horrendous drinking problem. Bella would often admit to doing things she didn’t do just to protect Lori and divert attention away from her. That wasn’t to say that Lori never got hit, but it was far less than Bella simply because her sister would act out on purpose to take the punishment for both of them. Lori never understood why her sister had such a strong sense of protection and loyalty, but it was almost as if she’d come programmed with it at birth.

Then there was the Cramer house where the sexual abuse of Bella began at ten years old. In that case, her beauty was something that haunted her. The two other foster boys in the house abused her for three years before the social worker finally removed the girls. When they were removed, Bella was thirteen and Lori was eleven, and there was no question that Bella was scarred for life. What she experienced at the Cramer’s was unthinkable, and Lori found it difficult going back in her mind to that time of their lives. While she was thankful that they always stayed together, she also wished that she never had to witness Bella’s constant abuse.

Bounced from house to house, the girls were never stable for long. Both had tried drugs, and both were sexually active at young ages. It seemed that no one cared. Their various foster parents never cared, and the state and county officials charged with protecting them certainly didn’t seem to care.

The unfortunate part of their story had been the lack of family. When their mother was mowed down by a drunk teenage driver, the girls had no family to care for them. The only living family member happened to be their great-grandmother, Elsie, who was ninety-two at the time and in a nursing home. Everyone else was gone, and the girls felt like they were invisible to the world.

When they went to their last foster home, they had very low expectations. After living in a group home for a year, they were finally placed with the Ellington family just outside of Atlanta. There was the mother, Carolyn, and the father, Dale. They had no other children, so Lori and Bella were their sole focus.

At fourteen years old, Bella was already more mature than many adults. She didn’t really want parents at that point. She wanted to live her life and make her own decisions, which did not sit well with the Ellingtons. She rebelled and wreaked so much havoc that they considered putting her back in the group home. Lori begged them not to take her sister away as she clung to any semblance of a normal family.

Bella eventually settled down, and things were good for a while. Although the Ellingtons were not very loving people, at least the daily abuse was gone and they could feel somewhat secure. When Lori got pregnant with Ethan at fourteen, the Ellingtons had finally had enough. They did not want to raise a baby, too, so they sent the girls back to the group home where they lived until Bella was considered an adult.

After much convincing, Bella was able to get guardianship of her younger sister when Lori was sixteen. Of course, by that time she had a baby. She and Bella moved to a small town in north Georgia called Madison Falls. They both just wanted to start over. After getting a job as a waitress at a local diner, Bella was able to get them a small apartment - and it was really, really small. With just one bedroom, one bathroom and a pull-out sofa bed, the girls managed to get by for a while.

Eventually, Lori was able to get herself together and become a mother to Ethan. At twenty-two, she was living on her own and had been for two years. She had a part-time job as a house cleaner and volunteered at Ethan’s school a lot of the time, too. She planned to go back to school in the Fall to get her degree as a legal secretary. But without Bella, she could never have made it. She owed her sister her life.

As Lori saw the large garbage truck careening out of control and heading toward her compact car, her last thoughts would be of her sister… and her son who would now be left without his mother, just like she had been.

How to Stay Sane as a Writer

Ah, the life of a writer. It sounds glamorous, doesn't it? You might imagine a writer sitting at her desk, looking out over some majestic scenery, crafting amazing love stories that will stand the test of time and make readers weep.

Or, you might imagine a more realistic scenario. Writer wakes up, drinks massive amounts of coffee, tells the kids to hush, wraps herself in a bath robe and stares at a blinking cursor for two hours before giving up and watching Judge Judy.

Either of these might be the truth on any given day. Some days, as with anything, are better than others. Some days, I am a creative machine, coming up with ideas so fast that I can't possibly write them all down. Other days, Judge Judy and I are close friends.

So, how does a writer stay sane? Here are my top three tips:

Tip #1: Stop trying to "do writing" the way someone else does it. I've suffered from this affliction before myself. It's very tempting to spend your life studying what other writers do. How do they write dialogue? How do they stay organized? Do they outline? While it's great to learn as many different methods for writing a book as possible, you have to realize that there is no one way to do it "right". You have to learn YOUR way of doing it right. Figure out what works for YOU, and don't spend your time trying to fit your way of doing things into someone else's. You'll just end up frustrated.

Tip #2: Realize that not everyone will love your work. You WILL get some negative reviews, and if you don't then you aren't writing stuff that pulls emotions from your readers. Use those negative reviews to improve your skills. On bad days where you feel like everyone hates your writing, go look at some of the negative reviews other big, successful writers have gotten on their books.

Tip #3: If you get stuck and experience writer's block, work on something else for awhile. Start a new book, read a book, watch a movie. Give your mind a break so that it can restart and get the creativity flowing again.

Being a writer is a blessing and a curse. Our minds are constantly creating new characters and plots, and you have to find the best way to channel that energy so that you don't drive yourself batty!

GUEST POST:

Thank you to Melinda for hosting me on the blog tour for TURNING POINT, the third book in The Kathleen Turner Series.  There will be a total of five books in the series.  Book four, OUT OF TURN, will be released on 12/17/13.

Melinda asked if I had any advice for newbie authors.  I think we are at an exciting time to be an author, perhaps the best time ever for anyone aspiring to write.  No one’s career is the same as another and everyone’s path is different.

My path began with self-publishing.  I had a career already in the IT field and wasn’t discontented with that choice.  Writing as a career was more one of those dreams that seemed very unobtainable.  So I concentrated on writing what made me happy and making it the best it could possibly be.  My first book went through three different editors and many revisions before I felt it was ready to be sold.  Amazon’s KDP program is what I chose and it was definitely the right path for me.  Soon after self-publishing my second book, I signed with Montlake Romance.

Self-publishing combined with the contract with Montlake enabled me to quit my day job and write full time.  I hope that remains the case and that the books sell well, but as any author can tell you, sales are impossible to predict so I may return to my IT field at some point, but I won’t stop writing.  I’m addicted now.

So my advice for newbie authors is this – write the very best book you can, edit and revise, then edit and revise again.  Keep your eye on your personal goal – is it to make a living as an author?  Have the prestige of an agent and/or publishing house behind you?  Both?  Either way, choose the path that will accomplish your goals, no one else’s, because at the end of the day, it’s YOUR career and YOUR life.

Now, enough serious talk.  Melinda wants me to talk about who I think are my Top 5 Romantic Heroes.  Um, talk about hot men?  Yes, please.  ;-)
#5 – Zsadist, Lover Awakened of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

What’s not to love about Zsadist?  His tortured psyche and scars, both emotional and physical, is enough to make any woman want to offer to be his shoulder to cry on, not that he’d take you up on that.  His vulnerability carefully disguised under a lethal exterior of menace and hostility make Zsadist the perfect contemporary tortured Alph-male hero.

#4 – Christopher Seton, A Rose in Winter by Kathleen Woodiwiss
Published in 1982, Kathleen Woodiwiss was ahead of her time in creating her hero, Christopher Seton.  More akin to the Alpha-male heroes of contemporary romance, Christopher is a dashing privateer who desperately falls in love with Erienne, the heroine of the novel, who ends up being auctioned on the block by her father to a wealthy but scarred Lord Saxton.  Murder, vengeance, a dark secret all wrapped around Christopher’s continued pursuit of Erienne make A Rose in Winter a book I’ve read and reread a dozen times.

#3 – Mr. Darcy, Pride and Prejudice
Is any list of romantic heroes complete without our Mr. Darcy?  Jane Austen is a favorite author and Pride and Prejudiceranks as high as Persuasion on my favorite novels list.  Deep and complex, Ms. Austen’s heroes keep you coming back for more.

#2 – Eric Northman, The Southern Vampire Mysteries
Six feet and four inches of blond haired, blue eyed, sex-on-two-legs – what’s not to like about Eric?  Oh yeah, he drinks blood, is over 1,000 years old and can fly, but why let those pesky little things bother you?  A complex and as Alph-male as they get, Eric is the standard to which I hold all other paranormal heroes in contemporary fiction.  (And Alexander Skarsgard’s portrayal of him on True Blood hasn’t hurt either.)

#1 – Rhett Butler, Gone with the Wind
Suave, dashing, charming, rich, a sometimes outlaw, Rhett Butler always knew just what to say and do in his unrelenting pursuit of the elusive Scarlett O’Hara.  A sometimes gorgeous, a lot heartbreaking, but always fascinating romance, these two characters have a love affair that spanned three marriages, a miscarriage, the death of a child, and a war.

Book Tour: Edie and the CEO Spotlight & Giveaway

EDIE AND THE CEO blurb
Edie Rowan is passionate about workers’ rights, wanting her Sixties protester grandparents to be proud of her. But championing the little guy gets her in trouble with sexy CEO Everett Kirk. Kirk is Mr. Ultra-Executive with his expensive hand-tailored suits and his eyes the steel blue of a finely tempered sword—but for the intriguing contradictions of his neat ponytail and square workman’s hands.

Edie’s latest disaster, a teambuilding exercise gone facepalm wrong, leads to a knockdown drag-out with rival manager Bethany “The B”—or add the “Itch”—Blondelle. The incident is the last straw for Kirk. He sends Edie to management camp and to her shock, announces he will drive her there himself. She wonders why he would want eighteen hours of enforced intimacy with her, even as she’s dazzled by his sparkling white smile and killer dimple.

Everett walks away from the confrontation with a headache. For years he has protected Edie from the fallout of her righteous crusading, but this may be the last time. A corporate backstabber is trying to eject Everett from his job. Even so, he’s looking forward to spending time on the drive with Edie, attracted to her sunny red curls, fiery personality and fine dark eyes.

Then a snowstorm forces them to seek shelter in an empty mountain cabin. Edie thinks she will take the lead in wilderness survival but Kirk proves more durable than his Italian loafers and silk sweater would suggest. The extended stay rubs them together in all sorts of ways, kindling emotional and physical flames. But when their corporate shells burn away, what secrets will be revealed?

An excerpt from
Edie and the CEO
Copyright © 2013 Mary Hughes All rights reserved — a Crimson Romance publication
Edie wants to make her 60s protester grandparents proud. But championing the little guy gets her in trouble with sexy CEO Everett Kirk. Someone's trying to force Everett out of his job, and Edie's latest escapade hasn't helped. A snowstorm and an empty cabin makes them confront their attraction.

Chapter One
Smack in the middle of the workday, because her brain was fried, Edith Ellen Rowan made her computer chirp Old MacDonald. Naturally that got her into trouble with The Bitch.
At first, Edie didn’t even register the problem. Four sunny bars bee-booped before it hit her—her computer was playing a children’s nursery song in an office full of conservative, nitpicky ears. Houghton Howell Enterprises was staid like an insurance company’s gray suit (fun was something you had on the golf course, or once a year at the Christmas party, but never ever on the job).
“Suck it to shell.” Edie hit the escape key. As ee-eye-ohhh died, she braced against the proverbial fan scattering the proverbial manure in the form of Bethany Blondelle, known to most of the company as The ‘B’ if they were feeling kindly, adding the ‘itch’ if they were not.
Shoulders hunched and breath held, Edie waited. She’d only been trying to motivate her people. Managing a team of programmers at HHE, a firm that sold innovative (read: expensive) solutions in accounting for large companies (read: deep pockets) wasn’t easy. Her team members were getting as fried as she, and so she’d proposed the music-writing contest.
Nothing happened. Edie gradually relaxed.
The Star Spangled Banner burst lustily from Jack’s cubicle next door. Edie groaned.
“What the HELL is that NOISE?” Bethany had her vocal caps lock on again. This would be bad. “Who’s making all that racket? Edie? Edie!”
Edie face-palmed. The contest was supposed to be a bit of fun, not cause for Armageddon. She’d have preferred to ignore The B, but “Bethany” and “proactive” were so synonymous they were hyperlinked on Wikipedia.
Sure enough, a long leg popped through the opening of Edie’s cubicle, followed by the lady herself in eye-bleeding red. Bethany’s fashion sense was from the DoMeHard channel. Her snappy skirts were hemmed just below her panty line. Today’s suit also featured a plunging sweetheart neckline, a chunky citrine necklace getting suffocated in her Wonder-enhanced cleavage. Her long, sleek hair was dyed crayon yellow #6.
Edie looked down at her own lacy teal tee, navy pants and wool blazer and wondered if she was underdressed.
Nah.
“What is the meaning of this racket?” Bethany leaned on Edie’s desk, looming over her. Invading personal space—“A” in the ABCs of corporate dominance.
“Project Pleiades. We had a month to deadline—until your good buddy Junior chopped that to a week.”
“Respect, Edie. Mr. Howell, not ‘Junior.’”
“I’ll respect Mr. Pharaoh Howell when he respects the workers. That deadline is a nightmare. My team has been working twelve-hour days and more. I’ve tried to push back, but you know Junior. Only the Evil Overlord can buck him.”
“Stop it.” Bethany tossed her head, a fleeting remnant of the girl Edie once knew. “The issue is not our executives. The issue is that...racket.” She waved her hand toward Jack’s cubicle, where the anthem was on its final verse.
“Handling Stress 101, Bethany. Work on something else.”
“Playing music on company time?” Bethany glared down her high-bridged nose.
“Stupidity 101. You should listen to me if you want to go anywhere in this company.” She pointed to her cleavage, fingertip disappearing to the first knuckle. “After all, my team’s twice the size of yours.”
“Bigger isn’t better. It’s all about how you use it.” Edie grinned. “How about you run your team and I’ll run mine?”
“You don’t run your team.” Bethany sneered. “They run you.”
“It’s called empowerment.” Edie took pride in her outspoken team. She wanted her grandparents, hard-core sixties protesters, to be proud of her. They’d raised her from a little girl when her parents had died, and she loved them to pieces. “It’s a proven management style.”
Jack’s computer shifted to A Hundred Bottles of Beer.
“Management?” One corner of Bethany’s perfect lips curled. “The only management I see is mis-management.”
“Ba-dum-bum.” Edie was suddenly tired of the whole conversation.
And, as Jack’s computer continued to tweet bottles down, doubt gnawed at her. It was quite a racket.
“Other people are trying to work.” Bethany went for the kill. “Keep your hooligans under control or I’m going to have to tell Mr. Kirk.”
Edie suppressed a moan. Of all the straight-laced overbearing big shots at HHE, Edward Everett Kirk, president and CEO, was the biggest, straight-laciest. Like laced corsets...naughty corsets in Kirk’s competent hands—
“The way you two fight, it’s only a matter of time before he gets fed up and fires you.” Mme La B’itch drew a red-enameled nail across her slim throat.
Edie winced. “It’s called ‘corporate unfriending’ now. And I couldn’t help the janitor incident. Or the thing with the Super Soaker. Look, I’ll talk to my people. Just cut us some slack, okay? We’ve been working ridiculous hours.”
“Edie, you idiot. Has it ever occurred to you that your ridiculous hours are because of you?”
Them’s fightin’ words. Edie raised narrowed eyes. “I beg your pardon?”
Bethany leaned knuckles on the desk. “Only one kind of project manager confuses effort with efficiency: a bad one.”
“Enough.” Edie jumped to her feet, nearly head-butting Bethany. “Outside. Now.”
“And freeze my butt off? Hardly.” Bethany’s nose was inches from Edie’s. “You have absolutely no decorum, do you? That shouldn’t surprise me, considering the hippies who raised you.”
Edie lost it. “My grandparents were heroes! They fought for what they believed in, rallied at protest marches—”
“Pretty stories. Your grandpa was a long-haired unwashed bum. Your grandma wasn’t much better than a free love hooker.”
Edie snarled. “Now you listen here, you b—”
“If Mr. Kirk were here—”
“Mr. Kirk,” a deep voice rang with power, “is here. And I want to know what, precisely, is going on.”
