Blurb:
Amanda Larson is dedicated to her job and doesn't want to make time for anything else. Until she runs into Jake Edwards. He used to be the cute boy next door; now he's a sexy, big shot lawyer.

Jake Edwards isn't interested in commitment. He's successful, sexy, and single--and that's how he likes it. When he reconnects with Amanda, Jake realizes he might have to rethink his philosophy on the carefree, bachelor lifestyle.

But, is it too late for them? Or can he convince her that he's ready to give her his heart?

SNIPPET:
Jake leaned in closer, running his hand down her arm. “Know what I’m thinking?”

Amanda fiddled with her coaster and smiled at him. “I’m not sure I want to know.”

“I’m thinking we should spend a lot more time together.” He reached over and held her chin. “It’s been way too long.”

Amanda licked her lips, and damn it, it actually turned him on. Sweet little Mandy Larson wasn’t so sweet anymore. She was driving him crazy.

She moved closer bridging distance. “Why wait? There’s no time like the present.”

“Exactly.” He drank the last of his beer as the waiter returned with her martini sans olive.

Jake leaned on the table with his elbows, folded his hands together and studied her.

“Look at you, drinking a martini, living the life in New York City.” He examined her from head to toe. “A sexy skirt. Tall boots.” He ran a finger down her cheek. “A beautiful face.”

Amanda hiccupped and put down her glass. “Now, wait a minute. I know it’s been a while, but some things never change, including you.” She wagged her finger at him. “No smooth talking with me. Don’t forget I used to know you better than anybody.”

Because his fingers actually ached with the need to touch her again, he reached over and held her hand. “Yeah, but things have changed, Mandy. We’re two different people now, and I can’t wait to get to know who you are now.”

Blurb:

But, is it too late for them? Or can he convince her that he's ready to give her his heart?

Excerpt:
Jake sighed. “I’ll get your door.” He got out and ran to her side of the car. As he opened the door for her, he held out his hand.

Amanda ignored him as she got out. I can’t look at him. If I look at him, I’ll melt into his stare. Get out, say goodnight and go home. As the car door closed, she turned and he leaned against the shiny, black fender with his hands in his pockets.

Jake lowered his gaze in confusion. “I hope you had a good time tonight, even though you’re acting like you didn’t.”

Amanda crossed her arms in front of her chest and sighed.

He took a step closer and shook his head, looking hotter than she’d ever seen him. His hands still rested in his pockets and his serious deep-blue eyes stared at her. “You don’t have to be scared of me.”

“I actually don’t trust myself, Jake.” She switched her weight to her other leg and rolled her eyes.

“Why? You think you’re going to jump me?” He chuckled as he took his last step to her. “I wouldn’t mind.” His gaze traveled over her face, as if he were memorizing every freckle.

He wanted more. Hell, she did too. But then what?

“So, you think that after I jump you, all this will go away?” She pointed back and forth.
“That this attraction will be out of our system and we can continue to be friends? Is that how it works for you?”

He clasped her body tightly to his, his hands wrapped around the sides of her waist, his breath on her face. “What I know is we’ve passed the line of friendship already, so we should just stop holding back.”

Then he kissed her. Completely. Thoroughly. Long and slow and deep. His lips were perfect and she found herself moving to get a closer touch – if that was possible. His hands roamed her back and warmth shot up her neck and back down to her toes. The man knew what he was doing. Either he was a pure player or his desire ranked up there with her own.

Since her knees wobbled, she balanced her hands on his chest, and before she was ready for it to end, he stepped back and smiled, “See what I mean?”

What makes a Great First Line? #amwriting

What makes a great first line? For me, it's the one line that hooks you and makes you want to keep reading the book. Sometimes it can be simple. Other times it can be complicated. But each and every line that grabs my attention have been funny -- or intriguing -- or something I can relate to.

I've been reworking an introduction of a WIP and as part of my revision, I've scoured my favorite reads first lines. In honor of this, I'm sharing my favorites below.

"Saying that she went to the annual Firefighter's Charity Breakfast for pancakes was like saying she watched baseball for the game  -- when everyone knew that you watched baseball for the guys tight uniform pants." - Always on My Mind, Jill Shalvis

"Kate Evans would've sold her soul for a stress-free morning, but either her soul wasn't worth much or whoever was in charge of granting wishes was taking a nap." Rumor Has It, Jill Shalvis

"Liz Kowalski's thirty-year-old shitbox, loaded down with everything she owned, went by the Welcome to Whitford, Maine sign trunk-first, bald tires hydroplaning as it headed for the ditch." - Love a Little Sideways, Shannon Stacey

"Rational thought and a working knowledge of hand-to-hand combat were useless when faced with the villainous power of the American house spider." Two of a Kind, Susan Mallery

"In the split second before hell exploded, Jackson Wilder picked up his weapon and pounded the bastard back." - Sweetest Mistake, Candis Terry

"Apparently, even spammers were bound and determined to shove her lack of a love life in her face today." - Falling for Her Fiance by Cindi Madsen

How about from my own novels? I spend a lot of time trying to form the perfect first line that will make you want to read more. Here they are:

One Lucky Night: Drink or Dare
"May your troubles be less and your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door," Killian recited the blessing his father taught him as he entered The Brazen Head.

Love and Other Games: Trouble with Gold
"Okay, buddies, this is the place," Chris declared displaying a wide grin under his retro beanie hat, splaying his hands out by his side.

Breaking the Rules
The minute Colin stepped foot into the middle school office, the sinking feeling dropped deep into the pit of his stomach.

Time Changes Everything (Temporarily unavailable)
Amanda's priorities for the evening did not include a night of playing hide-and-touch boy-toys with her friends.

The Boy Next Door (Temporarily unavailable)
With four words, Gabe ruined Amanda Larson's teenage life.

What is your favorite first line? Do you have a favorite author or one you've written in your own book? Please share in the comments!

Thanks for visiting,
Melinda

Time Changes Everything will be available in Audiobook at the end of the year!

My sensual Contemporary Romance, Time Changes Everything, has entranced me for years, screaming to me in my dreams. I finally had to write Mandy and Jake’s story so they’d stop shouting at me! I’m sure it will entrance you, too.

Amanda and Jake have been mesmerized with each other since they were little chasing fireflies and making mud pies in the springs of Louisiana.  Now as adults, their sexual attraction and tension curl my toes and excite me. Here’s a little sneak peek of what I’m talking about:

He contemplated running his fingers through her hair like he did his first year of college –– the last time they were alone –– the night he left town and never saw her again.
Did she remember the night he left? Of course she did. Seven years ago, he’d ruined their friendship. He knew Amanda almost as well as he knew himself. Well, he’d known her. Now she was a different woman.

Because his fingers actually ached with the need to touch her again, he reached over and held her hand. “Yeah, but things have changed, Mandy. We’re two different people now, and I can’t wait to get to know who you are now.”

One Moment: Time Changes Everything

My amazing friend and writer, Louise Gornall, tagged me in the next blog game – The One Moment Game. It’s been a while since I’ve played a game, and I always LOVE to share excerpts, so here it goes.

Here’s what you’ve got to do…
1.     Search for the words moment, forever, time or the like in your writing.
2.     Pick your favorite chunk containing one of these words.
3.     Post it on your blog.
4.     Tag others.
5.     And then head back over The Girl and post the link so we can read!
(Don’t forget to title your post One Moment: (The title of your story)!)
Don’t have anything? Write us a three paragraph story where time is everything!
So, here goes… FROM Time Changes Everything, my debut release published by Entranced Publishing on May 13, 2013.

“Jake!” Amanda climbed out of the booth and hugged him around the neck.
He folded his arms around her, and trapped her against him, while he held his beer bottle carefully so he wouldn’t spill on her. After letting go, they stared at one another for a moment -- a long moment. He observed her new look, starting with her glossy hair. His gaze lingered on her cleavage and the tantalizing glimpse of her breasts. The combination of the print skirt, pink sweater and tall boots made her stand out in the sea of black dresses.
Chloe cleared her throat. “Want to sit down?”
“Of course.” Jake escorted Amanda into the booth then squeezed his tall body next to her. He always had trouble fitting into booths, but he didn’t mind since he sat next to Mandy.
Amanda opened her mouth to talk, then closed it. She placed her fingers against her lips and shook her head in disbelief. “What are you doing here?”
“Well, I was searching for you, believe it or not. I heard you were in the city, and I needed to know if this tie went with my shirt. What do you think?”
Her friends laughed. Amanda, on the other hand, remained wordless, biting that full lip of hers.
What the hell did she think? He looked at her, that damn lip calling his name. Shit. Since when did her lips entice him? He stiffened. Why did she have to look so damn good?

Did you like it? You can read more about this friends turned lover story by finding Time Changes Everything at all major ebook retailers:

Now, tagging is a hard thing to do. So, consider yourself tagged if you liked this game! Follow the listed rules and have fun!

Sunday Snippet: Time Changes Everything #WeWriWa #8Sunday

It's been awhile since I participated in the Weekend Writing Warriors #8Sunday. It's great to be back! Weekend Writing Warriors choose 8 sentences from a WIP or published work to share on Sunday. Today I will share 8 sentences from my debut release, Time Changes Everything.

I will share the first 8 sentences from the novel. That's always a good start!

AMANDA’S PRIORITIES FOR THE evening did not include a night of playing hide-and-touch-boy-toys with her friends. But over the years, her roommate’s birthday had become a ritual, so she couldn’t back out.
She took a deep breath and walked down the steps of the newest after-work hotspot, Manahatta’s Bar and Grill. The second she opened the door, music rushed to her ears. She moved through the tangle of bodies, passing the bar stacked with shot glasses and alcohol bottles, to the back of the restaurant where her friend waited. Chloe waved Amanda over while she tried to shimmy herself into the booth.
“How can you squeeze into a booth wearing a tight skirt like that?” Amanda placed her Donna Karan purse on the seat and slid in, at the same time admiring the new matching shoes--her early-morning splurge to celebrate her latest accomplishment.

Can't wait for more? You can buy Time Changes Everything now at all major ebook retailers.
