Authors Share Their Time Out for Valentine's Day

In honor of Valentine's Day and my Valentine's Day novella, Time Out, Valentine, a few guest authors and I will share our best TIME OUT. It's so much fun to have Kristina, Rachel and Lynn here. Hope you enjoy...

From Me, Melinda Dozier, author of Time Out, Valentine from The Wild Rose Press.
My favorite romantic time out with hubby was a few years ago for our anniversary. We splurged on a night at a fancy boutique hotel in a quaint old historical town in Guatemala called Antigua. The hotel used to be a convent and it's very small and intimate. The room had a private garden and a fireplace, a bathroom with robes and slippers, music that played throughout the bedroom/shower ... and I always think this is a sign of "fanciness" ... a phone next to the toilet. The hallways were lit at night by candlelight and I could almost imagine the nuns walking around ... almost. Despite that vision, hubby and I had a very romantic evening. The atmosphere had a lot to do with it, but the alone time with my hubby was the frosting on the cake.

Best Time Out:

Two years ago, RadioMan, bebe and I took a cruise with our extended family (his mom, my mom, one of my brothers). The grandmothers took bebe off our hands one night so we could have a date - so we did the fancy ship restaurant and wine and delish desserts. But my favorite time of the night was after: We decided to wander the deck for a while and when we got to the back side, no one was out. The twinkle lights were on and there were a million stars in the sky. We sat down and just watched the sky and talked about nothing. It was the best time - and it was February 14th!

My best romantic Time Out…

I am lucky enough to be married to a very romantic man (not that he realizes it!) and my wonderful Mr B has done many romantic things for me over our 22 years together.

If I have to pick one that will never, ever leave my memory for as long as I live was when I mentioned that my favorite author Nora Roberts, was coming to Ireland to do a book signing. I was desperate to go as I live in England and this would most likely be the closest she ever came to visit.

Within 6 hours of telling my husband, he had booked a flight to Ireland and also a night at the fabulous hotel where Nora was signing and staying. Ashford Castle is the most amazingly romantic, beautiful place I have ever seen, and certainly stayed. I truly didn’t want to leave… sigh

I not only got a book signed by Nora and talked to her about my own writing, but enjoyed an afternoon tea, listened as Nora gave fabulous interview with her UK editor AND a hello from her later on in the hotel bar. I was heaven! On top of all this, my husband and I were upgraded to one of their best rooms…it was phenomenal.

Without doubt, a romantic Time Out!

As a mother of three little ones, and a husband who doesn't like to ever leave them behind, I've had all of ONE date in the last 3 years. Yes, ONE. Sad, isn't it?

My parents came for a visit last summer, and I INSISTED that Rob and I go out for dinner. We'd had a $50 gift certificate for a local restaurant in my sock drawer for a few years...time to use it already! My parents were more than happy to watch the kids, but it took a little nagging to get Rob to agree.

I made reservations for 4:30, which left more than enough time for us to make it back home before the kids' bedtimes.
We had a great Italian dinner, I enjoyed some vino, and we shared a cannoli. Mmmmmmm! While walking back to the car, Rob said to me, "You know, I actually had butterflies in my stomach before tonight." When I asked why, he said he was afraid we wouldn't have anything to talk about. I had to laugh, because we chatted the entire time about lovely meaningless things - NOT THE KIDS!!!!!!! - and laughed a lot.

We've decided to 'date' more often...just haven't had the chance again.

[Cover Reveal] Start me Up by Kristina Knight

Start Me Up, book two of The Rockers trilogy,
part of the Harlequin E Contemporary Box Set: Volume 2

When Hollywood hunk Chase MacIntyre proposes a faux relationship, disgraced L.A. matchmaker Nina Wright can't refuse…until some serious sexiness makes "on paper" happen between the sheets!

BLURB:
Matchmaker Nina Wright might work in LA but she keeps Hollywood types off her client list. She doesn't need their drama and she doesn't like the way so many of them exchange lovers like last year's accessories. But she needs one happy, high-profile client to get her business off the tabloid pages and back on solid ground.

Hollywood hottie Chase MacIntyre wants the gossip surrounding his lastest fling to stop and he knows exactly how to do it: show up on his next red carpet with a new woman and once he meets Nina Wright he knows she is the woman to stop the presses.

The problem? Once they're under cover, this business-only agreement is definitely too hot to handle…

Excerpt:

She sat back, crossing her arms over her chest. "You can't be serious."
His posture was the exact opposite of hers. Everything about him was opposite. Where she wore a pretty Stella McCartney blouse and prim pencil skirt, he wore ripped jeans and a tight black tee. Her strappy Manolos hadn't a single scratch. His Dr. Martens had to be from 1999 and looked like they'd cleaned up after one too many groupies in the green room.
You're in control here, Nina. You're the professional. He's the client. Shoo him away like the ass he really is.
Oh, but what a fine ass he has, the part of her brain she was definitely not listening to today said.
"I assure you I'm serious. I need a non-clingy, well-proportioned date for a gala fundraiser in two days and I'd prefer she have no illusions as to what this is about." He sat forward in his chair and Nina was sure she saw his abs ripple. She caught her breath and then forced her gaze from the spectacle and back to those blue-blue eyes. And promptly forgot to breathe again. "The money raised will keep music programs in at least fifteen local schools. To keep the cash coming I need the headlines to be about the event, not my social life."
"Then you should go alone."
"Going alone will keep the gossip rags talking. What I need is a pretty date for a one- night-only performance."
Nina blew out the breath she'd been holding. She didn't believe for a second this was a mercy date situation. More like a mercy hookup. She didn't do hookups. Her business set up marriage minded people who were matched based on an algorithm her aunt developed ten years before. An algorithm that had made the company a go-to in Los Angeles.
She shot a glance out the window at the press corps on the sidewalk below her window.
            Well, until this morning, anyway.
"I think you've got my firm confused with…something else entirely, but for future reference—" she typed a few words into the search engine on her computer and flipped the screen to face him "—I am a matchmaker. A noun, meaning one who arranges relationships or marriages." She opened the next tab and gestured to the computer screen. "I am not a madam, although madams are also nouns. There is a very large, very cavernous area between matchmaking and houses of prostitution."

Authors Share Their Lucky Nights @KristinaKnight @Henningland @JoAnnAinsworth @STBende

To celebrate the release of my anthology ONE LUCKY NIGHT, I've invited several author friends to share about when they've experienced luck in their life. I hope you enjoy!

KRISTINA KNIGHT
I am a firm believer that we make our own luck. And by 'making luck' I mean we create goals and work toward those goals to the best of our abilities. But there is still luck involved in that: I can sweat blood over a manuscript but if it hits an editor's desk right after she contracts a similar book…no joy. And I can make sure my self-published titles are edited and formatted as well as possible but if a reader doesn't connect with the characters…sadness.

So while I'm working to the best of my abilities, I'm also looking for those windows of opportunity – or luck.
Sometimes luck comes in dreams. This is going to sound a little bit woo-woo. But this is why I believe in working hard, making your own 'luck' and getting lucky:

Several years ago my husband and I were living in Nebraska – he worked at a local radio station, I worked at a local TV station. He called me one morning and told me he'd had a dream. In his dream, we played a KENO ticket and hit 8 out of 8 numbers (KENO is a lottery game). He said it was crazy but he really thought we should go buy a ticket and play the game that day. I said he was going to think I was crazy but I'd had a dream the night before – about our very conversation.
See? Woo-woo. I played the ticket for $20.

That night we went back to the restaurant where we bought the ticket. And we didn't hit 8 out of 8 numbers.

We hit 7 out of 8.
8 out of 8 would have won us $1000.
By hitting 7 out of 8 we turned our $20 into $475!
$475 isn't the same as winning a Mega Millions or anything…but for us, it was totally cool!

ST BENDE

My Lucky "Mistake"
My publishing journey hasn't exactly been the most straightforward, but I wouldn't change a thing about it. This sometimes farcically bumpy road was one the luckiest ones I've ever stumbled upon. Because along the way, I met this amazing community of readers and writers, who I rely on for pretty-much everything. They are my sounding board, my advice-givers, my beta-readers, and my cheerleaders on the inevitable dark days. I adore y'all, and I'm so grateful I lucked into this little corner of the writing world. Skal!!

JOANNE AINSWORTH

God was on my side when I left the beauty shop to find my passenger front tire low on air. I took it to Big O to have air added and the technician found a big nail in the tire that needed care right away. I signed in and arranged for the repair and an alignment/balancing before taking myself to lunch at a new Lithuanian restaurant. After a delicious and drawn-out meal of goulash and cabbage salad with Lazy chocolate cake for dessert, I walked back to Big O to be shown a tire with not only a nail but a torn section on the tire (which had been hidden by the metal rim).

I'd planned a trip to Napa which included a half hour of tight curves. If the tear hadn't been discovered, the tire could have blown on one of those curves.

This got me thinking of other times when Life brought the right person or the right information into my life to prevent disaster. I said a prayerful "thank you" right then and there for those "taps on the shoulder" which keep me out of trouble.

GINA HENNING

My Lucky Night
One of my most memorable lucky nights was the first evening of my honeymoon in Costa Rica. Now hold on, I’m not sharing that kind of story. No, this is about getting lucky with my husband in a different way. We were staying at a resort with a casino on site but our luck wasn't about money. It was about something much different. As soon as we arrived and made our way over the marble floors of this gorgeous hotel, we noticed something a little strange. We were the only ones at the reservation desk. We were the only guests in the lobby and finally the only people in the pool! The resort was empty, other than the hotel staff. Of course, I thought it was a bit odd, but then I ordered a margarita from the swim up bar and realized that it was pretty freaking awesome to have the whole place to ourselves. Part of the reason the hotel was vacant was due to timing, as we were married over Labor Day weekend, which just happens to be during off-season. However, nothing could have been more on, and I consider it to be one of the luckiest nights of my life.

[Cover Reveal] Mr. Right Now by Kristina Knight

An undercover reporter, an author trying to escape nasty headlines…one hot vacation!

When her celebrity boyfriend of three years dumps her and claims he's now gay, unlucky-in-love author Casey Cash decides to get out of New York. A cruise seems like the perfect escape: everyone onboard will be locked away from television, newspapers and internet gossip pages, allowing her some much needed relaxation. There's only one problem: her oh-so-helpful agent has hired a male escort for her...and a big NYC paper has sent a pesky reporter on-board, vowing to get the dirt. Mason Drury doesn't want to write an expose on Casey, but he's in a bind. After a source flipped on him, he's persona non grata at his newspaper. Celebrity trash or not, this story will put him back on top. Too bad he finds himself breaking the first rule of reporting by getting attached to his subject and letting bias influence his story. Casey's much more interested in sexy Mason than the annoying escort who's bunking in her room. Mason might even have romantic potential if she can shake her well-meaning-but nosey-fans. Oh, and that reporter. She's got to avoid him at all costs...

Excerpt:

Casey needed things to slow down. And she desperately wanted whatever was happening to speed up. She didn’t know who Mason was. Didn’t know if he was the reporter or just some random guy. Her head said he was the reporter. Why else would he have hit on her so hard from the time she came on board? It had to be part of his plan.

But then, why would a reporter waste time talking to a random woman about her life? Setting her up with another harmless guy who would bolster her self-confidence and help her bounce back from rejection. That was something a nice guy would do. Casey wanted badly for Mason to be a nice guy. Just for a little bit.

Then she’d go back to the craziness of Tyler and figuring out who the reporter was. How to avoid him and save what was left of her reputation.

Surely her future could spare her a few more minutes with Mason Drury.

“What’s your plan?” he asked, his eyes intent on hers.

What was her plan? She knew she had one. It was a good one, too. What was it again?

He pressed his lips to hers, and she didn’t care about plans or who was following whom.

One little kiss.

What could it hurt?

[Cover Reveal] The Saint's Devilish Deal by Kristina Knight

Title: The Saint's Devilish Deal
Author: Kristina Knight

Tagline:
A billionaire surfer… A down-on-her-luck hotelier… One hot summer fling…

Blurb: Esmerelda Quinn has been looking for a place to belong since her parents were killed in a car crash when she was young. The closest thing to home has always been Aunt Constance's villa in Puerto Vallarta, so after a string of dead-end hotellier jobs, she's coming home to run the villa.
Santiago Cruz has called the villa home for as long as he can remember. In between surfing events, Constance has always had a room for him. Color him surprised when Constance decides to retire - and leaves a joint interest in the villa to both Santiago and Esme.
Esme isn't thrilled to share ownership of the villa with the the youngest Cruz brother - especially when she learns Santiago's brother has been after the villa for years. But Santiago has grown up while she's been away at school and soon she finds herself falling for the rich boy down the hall.

Excerpt:
“You forget yourself, Esmerelda. You’re talking about making this simple for the staff, that doesn’t mean I need to come to you for every new guest registration or idea I have. Besides, we need this campaign.” Santiago waved his hand. “We need more guests of a certain means to make the villa stand out. Families are great, but they won’t make Casa Constance a go-to destination. These people will. So, we use our new guests as features in a new campaign for the high-end travel magazines. A few shots in the tabloids wouldn’t hurt, either.”
“You weren’t even going to discuss this with me?”
“I’m telling you now. While we’re on the subject—” he tossed a few magazines from his desktop onto her lap “—what do you see in these pictures?”
Esme sent him a killing glance and then flipped through the pages. “Boring. Bland. Not home.”
“Exactly. This isn’t a home, or it shouldn’t be a home first. If you want Casa Constance to succeed you need to treat it like a business. So, make-over, what do you like?”
She tossed the magazines back onto the desktop. “Our guests love the color and textures of Old Mexico. They say so all the time.”
“Your guests haven’t been in residence, at least not actively, in more than a year. We aren’t appealing to anyone right now and we need to. So, makeover starts this afternoon and your new training begins in the morning.”
“I know what I need to know about running a vacation resort.”
“You need to experience a vacation to sell it. We need day-trips, we need amenities. I’ll bet you’ve never gone para-sailing or sky diving, much less enjoyed a couple’s massage.” Her cheeks pinked at the last suggestion and Santiago smiled. “Celebrities visiting Casa, playing on our private beach, being featured in an advertising campaign—with a few pictures leaked to the tabloids to get the word out even sooner. Casa needs this.”
Esme took a few breaths and then settled back into her chair. “I can’t afford to pay the salary of a New York advertising crew. Seriously, Santiago, you have to cancel.”
“My three months, remember? It won’t cost you a thing. The photographer owes me a favor. The only cost will be the campaign copy, which will be negligible. I do know what I’m doing, Esmerelda.”
“Okay, mail.” Esme shook her head as if clearing thoughts of the upcoming ad campaign from her head. “Marquez usually separates bills from letters—”
“As the mail will be delivered to the front desk, I’m happy to see to it. And let’s cut to the chase.” He leaned back in the chair and clasped his hands behind his head. “I don’t want to be tied down to a vacation villa for the rest of my life. But if you really want this, there is something you have to do for me. First.”
Esme swallowed, crossed and re-crossed her legs before clasping her hands in her lap. “What do you want? A payoff? You’ve seen the books, you know there isn’t much money. But if it’s money you want, I’ll agree to your price. I just need time to come up with the capital.”
She really didn’t know him at all. He shouldn’t be surprised, but he was. Surprised and a bit disappointed. “I need your money like I need another surfing championship,” he said, sitting up straight. “No, what I want from you is a bit more. . . ephemeral. I want your time. For three hours each day, you belong to me. No villa work. No guest handholding.” He walked around the desk to rest his hip against one corner. “No conferences with staff. No following the maids on their routine cleanings and no visits to the kitchen to give Gloriana instructions. For three hours each day, your time is my time.”
“You can’t be serious. That. . . that’s just. . .” She trailed off when his index finger traced the line of her jaw. He lowered his voice.
“No work. No phones. No villa. You do what I say, what I want.”
