Tips for Writers (Top Five Mistakes NOT to Make)

Hi. Thanks so much for having me. :-)
I’ve dreamed of being an author for most of my life, starting with short stories that were passed around the lunch table in elementary school. I had a fascination with books and when I read my first Harlequin as a teen, I hoped one day I’d be a Harlequin Author.

And so this is a list of things I wish I’d known on my long and windy journey to becoming a romance author.

#1 – Dreams do come true. This is vitally important to know. You have to believe in yourself and in your abilities because not everyone is going to pat you on the back. You need to believe that one way or another, you’ll achieve your dreams so that you can let go of the negativity that will come your way.

#2 – Don’t be in a rush. Yes, it’s good to have forward momentum, but don’t forget to slow down and polish, polish, polish. Whether you’re going the traditional route or the indie avenue, you need to present your cleanest work and no it won’t be perfect, no book ever is. But you need to know that you did your absolute best.

#3 – Don’t spin your wheels. Learn to let go. Before I was published, I was the queen of rewrites. I was a punster in those days and when I found a mistake with the story, I’d have to rewrite it. Now I plot and I fix the synopsis before writing the book. But in the end, some stories just aren’t salvageable. Just like when my hubby asks me what happened to such and such story, I tell him that the story is gone. Never to see the light of day. I can see the surprised look in his eyes but in the end, it’s for the best.

#4 – Don’t try to be the master of every sub-genre. Find what sub-genre fits your voice. Just because you love to read a certain genre doesn’t mean you can write it. And there are a lot of contests with editors looking for fresh voices. When you’re starting, pick your strongest sub-genre and focus in on it. The more you write, the better you’ll get.

#5 – Don’t give up. Yes, I did give up at one point. I was so totally frustrated and hurt with my first “R” (rejection) that I tossed aside all of my writing and gave up…for a few months. As Michelle Styles taught me, it’s all about what you do after the “R” that counts.

Not to mention create a homecoming—and a wedding!—worthy of his Chacon Callahan bride!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Ash Callahan wasn’t easy to track. She used only cash. There were no phone calls, no computer emails to track. It was as if she’d disappeared—which she’d obviously intended to do.
In the end, he’d gone to Running Bear for direction, only to be amazed that Running Bear hadn’t heard from Ash, either. Those two shared the same untamed spirit.
But Xav got a pointer or two from Running Bear that sent him on a path to find her. Now he shifted on the white-painted porch, hearing footsteps inside, hoping his journey wasn’t a dead end. It had been too many months since he’d held the love of his life in his arms.
A middle-aged woman opened the door, a questioning frown on her face. “Yes?”
“Hi.” He gave her his most friendly smile. “I’m Xav Phillips, from Diablo, New Mexico. I’m looking for a woman named Ashlyn Callahan.”
The woman shook her head, glancing over her shoulder when a baby’s cry burst in the background. “I’m sorry, no. I’ve never heard of her.”
He couldn’t say what made him linger on the porch. Maybe it was because he’d come so far and was so disappointed to find his search turning up a dead end again. Another baby’s cries joined the first, sending up a wail of epic proportions between them, which made the woman anxiously begin to back away.
“Excuse me,” she said, “good luck finding whomever you’re looking for.”
She closed the door. Xav hesitated, then leaned his ear against the wood. He heard soft voices inside comforting the babies, and then unbelievably, he heard a voice he’d know any day, any night, whether he was awake, asleep or even in a coma.
“Sweet baby, don’t fuss. My little prince,” he heard Ash say, and in a flash, he slid over to the enormous glass window framing the Christmas tree so he could peer cautiously inside the house.
Behind the large, ruffle-branched Christmas tree, four white bassinets lay together in a room decorated for the holidays amid beautifully wrapped gifts. He held his breath, watching Ash comfort a tiny infant boy. Ash’s shock of pale hair had grown into a waterfall of silver liquid she wore in a ponytail. Xav grew warm all over despite the cold, and Cupid’s arrow shot right into his heart, the same way it had every time he’d ever gotten within two miles of her.
He was head over heels in love with her, and nine long months apart had done nothing to diminish those emotions. The ring in his pocket practically burned, reminding him how long he’d waited to ask her to marry him.
She put the baby down and picked up another, a sweet, pink-pajamaed little girl, and Xav’s heart felt like it splatted on the ground. She acted as if these were her children, so loving and gentle was she as she held them. Xav was poleaxed with new thoughts of making Ash a mother. Motherhood and Ash weren’t a combination he’d ever really put together in his head, but watching her with these children made him realize his original proposal wasn’t the one he wanted to offer her.
He didn’t want to fall back on a business arrangement to save his ego.
No, he was going all in. He was going to tell her the truth about the shot she’d allegedly fired at Wolf, because clearly that was why she was hiding out here, helping the older lady babysit her family’s babies. Or maybe she ran a babysitting service. It didn’t matter. The point was, Ash was in hiding and he was going to tell her the truth: She was not the hunted one. She was not destined to bring destruction to Rancho Diablo and her family.
And then he was going to ask her to be his wife.
[Book Review] The Perfect Match by Kristan Higgins 4 1/2 STARS!
17738218
THE PERFECT MATCH by Kristan Higgins
HARLEQUIN
What if the perfect match is a perfect surprise?
Honor Holland has just been unceremoniously rejected by her lifelong crush. And now—a mere three weeks later—Mr. Perfect is engaged to her best friend. But resilient, reliable Honor is going to pick herself up, dust herself off and get back out there… or she would if dating in Manningsport, New York, population 715, wasn't easier said than done.
Charming, handsome British professor Tom Barlow just wants to do right by his unofficial stepson, Charlie, but his visa is about to expire. Now Tom must either get a green card or leave the States—and leave Charlie behind.
In a moment of impulsiveness, Honor agrees to help Tom with a marriage of convenience—and make her ex jealous in the process. But juggling a fiancĂ©, hiding out from her former best friend and managing her job at the family vineyard isn't easy. And as sparks start to fly between Honor and Tom, they might discover that their pretend relationship is far too perfect to be anything but true love…
4 1/2 STARS!
I love Kristin Higgins and she never disappoints! Her humor is the best medicine. Tie that in with a hunky hero and a sweet heroine and you have a perfect book!
Two people are "forced" together to help each other out, but in the end they realize they are the perfect match for one another. I loved Tom and his British accent along with his colloquialisms. And a tortured hero always tugs at my heart. Tom's rough past has to do with a woman who cheated on him and a step-son that he loves. Seeing the relationship between Tom and Charlie build also had me falling for him! Honor is everyone's "go to" woman. She's trustworthy, honest and reliable. Poor thing gets a kick in the heart and takes desperate measures so that she can have a family of her own.
I did find the beginning slow -- I wanted Tom and Honor to connect sooner, but when they finally did, the pacing picked up.
A great read! Can't wait to see more from the Blue Heron series! That family is one of my faves.
Book Review: The Risk-Taker by Kira Sinclair
The Risk-Taker
The Risk-Taker by Kira Sinclair
Back of the Book
Subject: Totally buff ranger Gage Harper
Current Status: Walking wounded—both physically and mentally
Mission: Finally get the girl he could never have
Obstacle: She may just be the biggest risk he's ever taken
All returned POW Gage Harper wants to do is forget, even if he has to let some gym rat beat him to a pulp to do it. He certainly doesn't want to tell the tale of his heroism to the tabloids. Especially since he's no hero…. But one journalist is determined to get the inside scoop—and she's the only girl Gage has never been able to resist.
Hope Rawlings never took Gage's romantic advances seriously growing up. After all, she was just his buddy, and a guy like Gage could have any girl he wanted. But now she needs his story to get her dream job in the city. And she's willing to do anything to get it.
Gage Harper returns to his hometown, Valentine, after being rescued from a horrific experience in Afghanistan. Now a hero and instant celebrity, he has to learn how to deal with his emotions. Running into Hope Rawlings, his childhood best friend and crush, he discovers that his love for her has never died. He has to convince her to want him as much as he wants her. Lucky for him, they are paired up in the city's Cupid Couples week, where they are forced to spend time together. Little did he know that Hope paid to be paired up with him, because as a journalist, she wants his story - and only his story - if only her heart wouldn't get in the way.
What a wonderful story with real characters and real emotions. Of course, since this is a Blaze, there are some hot scenes that I could read over and over. Gage is a likeable hero with pure Alpha tendencies. However, his hurt and pain is so true that I want to reach into the book and hug him myself. A real wounded soldier in need of some tenderness which is given by Hope.
I'm a sucker for friends to lovers stories. This one won't disappoint!
Thanks for stopping by,
Melinda
