But, when her sister's indiscretion leads to an unplanned pregnancy, and the subsequent disgrace of Elizabeth's entire family, her idyllic life is thrown into disarray.

First, her fiance is prohibited from marrying her. Then she receives word that William has been killed by thieves. To top it all off, she gets abducted by a highwayman. Can Elizabeth find love again, and with the most unlikely of people?

 Excerpt

Every morning, at exactly half past noon, Lady Bennington began her traverse of the entire length of Rathbonne, the Bennington family estate. She did this at the insistence of her Mama, who recommended that she do so in order to have a desirable marriage. It was advice that she took very seriously — that is to say she took only half of it very seriously. She refused to refrain from pastries and pies, both of which satisfied her demanding sweet tooth.

The estate did not make for an easy walk. It spanned over twenty acres and took her the better part of half an hour to complete, if she moved at a leisurely pace. She always moved at a leisurely pace, getting lost in her thoughts and fantasies of faraway lands and foreign cultures.

Sometimes, rather than walk back to the house, she would bring a book and stay in the high field amongst the shepherds and their grazing sheep, and read.

This morning she decided that rather than reading in the high field, she’d go to the brook behind the property that divided Rathbonne from the neighboring Highborne estate. Highborne was the country home of the Duke of Staffordshire and his family, with whom the Benningtons were well acquainted. She removed the blanket from under her arm and smoothed it out on the grass beneath the tall oak, making herself cozy enough to lose herself in Paradise Lost.

“Lady Elizabeth, I bid you good afternoon,” a familiar voice yelled in the distance.

Elizabeth looked up from her book. Lord William Hartley, her childhood friend and the second son of the Duke, was approaching on horseback. Will, like herself, was a younger child and the two of them had been raised closely. Unlike Elizabeth, he would inherit property in his own right, and his father’s title if something should cause the death of his brother. Elizabeth’s fortunes relied entirely on her marrying well.

GUEST POST:

Thank you to Melinda for hosting me on the blog tour for TURNING POINT, the third book in The Kathleen Turner Series.  There will be a total of five books in the series.  Book four, OUT OF TURN, will be released on 12/17/13.

Melinda asked if I had any advice for newbie authors.  I think we are at an exciting time to be an author, perhaps the best time ever for anyone aspiring to write.  No one’s career is the same as another and everyone’s path is different.

My path began with self-publishing.  I had a career already in the IT field and wasn’t discontented with that choice.  Writing as a career was more one of those dreams that seemed very unobtainable.  So I concentrated on writing what made me happy and making it the best it could possibly be.  My first book went through three different editors and many revisions before I felt it was ready to be sold.  Amazon’s KDP program is what I chose and it was definitely the right path for me.  Soon after self-publishing my second book, I signed with Montlake Romance.

Self-publishing combined with the contract with Montlake enabled me to quit my day job and write full time.  I hope that remains the case and that the books sell well, but as any author can tell you, sales are impossible to predict so I may return to my IT field at some point, but I won’t stop writing.  I’m addicted now.

So my advice for newbie authors is this – write the very best book you can, edit and revise, then edit and revise again.  Keep your eye on your personal goal – is it to make a living as an author?  Have the prestige of an agent and/or publishing house behind you?  Both?  Either way, choose the path that will accomplish your goals, no one else’s, because at the end of the day, it’s YOUR career and YOUR life.

Now, enough serious talk.  Melinda wants me to talk about who I think are my Top 5 Romantic Heroes.  Um, talk about hot men?  Yes, please.  ;-)
#5 – Zsadist, Lover Awakened of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

What’s not to love about Zsadist?  His tortured psyche and scars, both emotional and physical, is enough to make any woman want to offer to be his shoulder to cry on, not that he’d take you up on that.  His vulnerability carefully disguised under a lethal exterior of menace and hostility make Zsadist the perfect contemporary tortured Alph-male hero.

#4 – Christopher Seton, A Rose in Winter by Kathleen Woodiwiss
Published in 1982, Kathleen Woodiwiss was ahead of her time in creating her hero, Christopher Seton.  More akin to the Alpha-male heroes of contemporary romance, Christopher is a dashing privateer who desperately falls in love with Erienne, the heroine of the novel, who ends up being auctioned on the block by her father to a wealthy but scarred Lord Saxton.  Murder, vengeance, a dark secret all wrapped around Christopher’s continued pursuit of Erienne make A Rose in Winter a book I’ve read and reread a dozen times.

#3 – Mr. Darcy, Pride and Prejudice
Is any list of romantic heroes complete without our Mr. Darcy?  Jane Austen is a favorite author and Pride and Prejudiceranks as high as Persuasion on my favorite novels list.  Deep and complex, Ms. Austen’s heroes keep you coming back for more.

#2 – Eric Northman, The Southern Vampire Mysteries
Six feet and four inches of blond haired, blue eyed, sex-on-two-legs – what’s not to like about Eric?  Oh yeah, he drinks blood, is over 1,000 years old and can fly, but why let those pesky little things bother you?  A complex and as Alph-male as they get, Eric is the standard to which I hold all other paranormal heroes in contemporary fiction.  (And Alexander Skarsgard’s portrayal of him on True Blood hasn’t hurt either.)

#1 – Rhett Butler, Gone with the Wind
Suave, dashing, charming, rich, a sometimes outlaw, Rhett Butler always knew just what to say and do in his unrelenting pursuit of the elusive Scarlett O’Hara.  A sometimes gorgeous, a lot heartbreaking, but always fascinating romance, these two characters have a love affair that spanned three marriages, a miscarriage, the death of a child, and a war.

#NewRelease Announcement - Hidden Under Her Heart by Rachelle Ayala

I'm pleased to feature Rachelle Ayala's newest novel, Hidden Under Her Heart. Rachelle was one of my many excellent critique partners for Time Changes Everything. It's a pleasure to have her book spotlighted here.

HIDDEN UNDER HER HEART (A Story of Abortion & Courage) by Rachelle Ayala

Maryanne Torres is a compassionate nurse who fails at relationships. After a string of losers, she swears off premarital sex, hoping to land a marrying type of man.

Lucas Knight, a law-school dropout, moves to California to train for the Ironman Triathlon. He's smart, sweet, and everything Maryanne wants in a man, but their relationship suffers from his dedication to the sport. Seeking consolation in the arms of a handsome preacher's son, Maryanne attends a church party where she is raped.

Maryanne is pregnant from the rape and plans to abort. But the identity of her rapist is hidden in her baby's DNA. Lucas asks Maryanne to seek alternatives and pledges to support her through the pregnancy. When Lucas becomes the prime suspect, Maryanne must clear his name and make a life changing decision.

The rapist has other ideas. In order to destroy the evidence, he offers Maryanne an illegal offshore abortion. With Maryanne's life in danger, Lucas races to save her and her baby. However, Maryanne hides a secret that threatens to tear them apart forever.

A 99,000-word women's fiction, HIDDEN UNDER HER HEART deals with the consequences of rape and abortion.

From the Author
Hidden Under Her Heart is an emotional and hard-hitting story about a young woman facing a heart-wrenching decision. We’ve heard the rhetoric, maybe even argued over the issue of abortion and rape. But behind the debates are real people—women and men with real problems and feelings. My story is not meant to be preachy, but compassionate, especially for post-abortive parents seeking closure. I think people on both sides of the fence will find meaning in the changes that both Maryanne and Lucas go through. Ultimately, it is an uplifting story, and my hope is that it will be a help to you.

About the Author
I am the author of three novels: Michal’s Window, a historical romance between King David and his first wife, the princess Michal, Broken Build, a romantic suspense thriller set in a Silicon Valley startup, and Hidden Under Her Heart, a story about a nurse wrestling with her decision to abort. My stories tend to be dramatic and emotional, crossing genres and cultures. I like to dive deep and live through my characters’ eyes. Each of them are passionate but flawed women paired with conflicted men with good hearts. I hope you enjoy the emotional journey I take you on. I love to hear from readers. A Song for Julia Blog Tour - #Giveaway - $250 GC & ecopy

Blurb
Everyone should have something to rebel against.

Crank Wilson left his South Boston home at sixteen to start a punk band and burn out his rage at the world. Six years later, he’s still at odds with his father, a Boston cop, and doesn’t ever speak to his mother. The only relationship that really matters is with his younger brother, but watching out for Sean can be a full-time job. The one thing Crank wants in life is to be left the hell alone to write his music and drive his band to success.

Julia Thompson left a secret behind in Beijing that exploded into scandal in Washington, DC, threatening her father's career and dominating her family's life. Now, in her senior year at Harvard, she's haunted by a voice from her past and refuses to ever lose control of her emotions again, especially when it comes to a guy.

When Julia and Crank meet at an anti-war protest in Washington in the fall of 2002, the connection between them is so powerful it threatens to tear everything apart.

Interview of Charles Sheehan-Miles:

Could you please start by telling us a little about yourself?

Let’s see… I’m forty one years old. I served in the Army during the 91 Gulf War, and spent much of the last two decades involved in one way or another in veterans’ issues, primarily focused on Gulf War veterans’ illnesses, PTSD and other related issues.

I met the love of my life in an independent bookstore in Atlanta (Oxford Books) and we got married in the bookstore on April Fools Day of 1994. You have to have a sense of humor about these things. We’re coming up on 19 years, now, and have two great kids, 17 and 12. My family is very supportive of my writing.

What a romantic story! Now, to your book, what is your favorite scene in A Song for Julia?

Julia, the title character, comes from a diplomatic family, and in the course of the story her father, a retired ambassador, is asked to go to Iraq with a UN team to attempt to negotiate with Saddam Hussein’s government. Julia, unwillingly, is dragged along to a dinner at the White House with President and Laura Bush. It’s an awkward scene, full of hidden tension that most of the characters don’t understand at all, but I tried to focus on keeping it very human and sometimes funny. I really enjoyed writing that one.

Fascinating. I guess that's where your experiences in Iraq come in.
As I writer, I'd like to know if you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?

I tend to get to know my characters as I go along. Sometimes I get surprised, and find out things that I hadn’t planned, and that take the story in a different direction than I originally anticipated. I love it when that happens, though usually that means going back and rewriting early chapters in order to stay consistent.

With Crank and Julia, I knew just the barest sketch about them, from a few paragraphs of Just Remember to Breathe. I knew Julia had defied her parents and ended up managing Crank’s band, I knew the name of the band… and that was just about it. So when I started the story, all I had was a date and two characters. Everything flowed from there.

Thanks so much, Charles and I wish you the best of luck.

Guest Author: Sonya Clark

Welcome Sonya! Congratulations on your newest release and signing with Carina Press. Both exciting news!

As an author myself, I love to hear about other writers. I think each of us have a background that helps create our books. So, let's get on with the interview and learn a little about Sonya Clark.

Do you plan all your characters out before you start a story or do they develop as you write?

I've tried all kinds of different character charts but none of them have been useful to me. Hair color, eye color, height, favorite movie - all of that can be changed. What difference does it make what a character's favorite movie is? Making a list of favorites is just a way to procrastinate. For me, the best way to develop a character is to write that character. Flash fiction and short stories are a great way to do that before getting into the main story. I did that with two of the main characters in Red House and it was a tremendous help. It taught me their voice, their essence, the things that make them unique and three dimensional. From there, I can figure out what they want, their strengths and weaknesses, what gets them out of bed in the morning, and if something like a favorite movie even matters. Then, once I start the book, I've got pretty good idea of who these people are that I'm writing about. It's a huge help.

That's an excellent idea. I think knowing a character from the inside out is important for an author, but you're right. Who cares what movie they like! Flash fiction is a wonderful way to "learn" who your character is.

What main genre do you write in?

What I write tends to straddle the line between urban fantasy and paranormal romance. I love the noir aspects of urban fantasy, the focus on action and danger. But I also love romance. Some of what I write is more UF, some of it is definitely PNR. Paranormal is the common denominator, though. I love writing about magic and the supernatural.

We can see those elements in Red House.

What is your writing process? Do you outline, fly by the seat of your pants or a combination of both?

I used to fly by the seat of my pants, plot-wise, and just rely on characters to propel the story forward. Red House is the book that broke me of that. I didn't have an outline so I wound up going back and forth on a lot of things, doing a lot of rewriting, a lot of second-guessing. Writing this book was very painful, to the point of being demoralizing. By the time I reached the end, I hated the book. That's not the best feeling, so I decided I needed to do something different. For the next book I wrote I created an outline and the entire process was much smoother. Quicker too, which was nice because it felt like it took forever to write Red House. So I'm a big fan of outlining now. J

I've experienced that, too. Some books just flow easier than others. We're glad Red House made it to the final stages!

Is there a genre of book you would like to write but haven't yet?

Science fiction. I'd love to write a sci-fi romance that explores artificial intelligence. Blame that on seeing Blade Runner at an impressionable age. J

I love reading Science Fiction, but never seem to find the time. Reading romance is what keeps me on my toes.

How can readers find out more about you and your books?

My blog/website can be found at www.sonyaclark.net. There's info about my books and links to various social networks where I can be found.

Thank you for being here, Sonya! Good luck on your journey and we look forward to seeing your newest Carina Press novel next year.
